When our own Grandfather Nick needed a new place to call home, we discovered how hard it is to find the right one. The brochures said all the right things. The websites showed beautiful photos. But behind every door was a different story — different staff, different cultures, different levels of care.
We navigated it as a family with more than two decades of hospice care experience between us. Even then, it was hard. We can only imagine how it feels for a family doing it for the first time.
That’s why we started Guiding Light.
Why we’re writing
You’ll find articles here that answer the questions families actually ask us — the ones that keep them up at night. Things like:
- What’s the real difference between Assisted Living and a Residential Care Home?
- How do I know if it’s time to consider placement?
- What questions should I ask when I tour a facility?
- How do I talk to Mom or Dad about moving?
- What does Medi-Cal cover, and what doesn’t it?
We won’t pretend to have every answer. But after 20+ years of walking beside families through this, we know a few things. And we’d rather share them here than let them stay locked in our heads.
What to expect
We’ll aim for one or two new articles a month. Some will be practical — checklists, comparisons, questions to ask. Others will be stories — from families we’ve helped, and from our own life.
